As we step into a new year, many travelers are dreaming about where they’ll go next—Italy, Australia, Germany, or maybe somewhere entirely new. After 19 years in the travel industry and as the owner of One World Family Travel, LLC, I’ve seen travel change dramatically, but one thing remains constant: informed travelers have better trips.
Travel advisors don’t just book vacations—we advocate, strategize, troubleshoot, and design experiences that align with you. As you start planning your upcoming travels, here are ten things travel advisors everywhere wish our clients truly understood.

Travel arrangements are contractual and binding

When you book a trip, you’re not just making a casual reservation—you’re entering into a legal contract with airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators. Each supplier has its own terms and conditions, including cancellation penalties and payment schedules. The payment deadline is the payment deadline, and the cancellation fee is the cancellation fee.  Once you agree to those terms, they are binding. Understanding this upfront helps set realistic expectations and prevents unpleasant surprises later.

Travel protection is essential

A doctor’s note alone will not get you a refund. If you decline to purchase insurance and need to cancel, your supplier, such as the cruise line, will tell you that this is what travel protection is for and refer you back to their terms and conditions.  Travel insurance exists for a reason—and it’s about much more than trip cancellation. Comprehensive travel protection can cover medical emergencies, trip interruptions, delays, lost luggage, evacuation, and more. The right policy can be the difference between a stressful situation and one that’s financially manageable.

Advisors shoulder the stress—so you don’t have to

When flights are canceled, borders change, luggage goes missing, or weather disrupts plans, your travel advisor is already working behind the scenes. We deal with hold times, supplier negotiations, and rebooking logistics so you don’t have to. When things go wrong (and sometimes they do), we have your back.

Our clients—not commissions—come first

We don’t recommend an itinerary, hotel, or destination because it benefits us. We recommend it because we genuinely believe it’s the best fit for your travel style, goals, and budget. Every traveler is different, and our job is to listen carefully and curate options that align with what you want—not what’s trending or convenient.

A great advisor elevates your trip in ways you can’t Google

Truffle hunting in Tuscany is just one type of local experience a travel advisor can arrange (that’s me!)

Whether you’re heading to Italy, Australia, Germany, or beyond, a knowledgeable travel advisor adds value you didn’t even know existed. From authentic local experiences and strategic hotel locations to timing tricks and insider access, we know how to turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.  Plus, we can often offer added surprises and inclusions to enhance your trip.

Last-minute plans often mean higher prices and fewer choices

Spontaneous travel can be exciting—but it’s rarely cost-effective. Planning earlier typically means better pricing, more availability, and greater choice when it comes to flights, accommodations, and experiences. Popular destinations and peak travel periods reward those who plan ahead.

Flexibility can save you real money

Being open to adjusting your travel dates, airports, or even destinations can unlock significant savings and improve your overall experience. A little flexibility gives your advisor room to work magic—often resulting in lower costs or upgraded experiences.  Remember, though.  Value isn’t always about price, and sometimes you do have to pay for what you really want.

Travel is a profession—just like dentistry or auto repair

Your dentist knows teeth. Your auto mechanic knows cars. And while friends and family may mean well, travel planning is my profession. I won’t steer you based on my personal preferences or someone else’s opinion—only on what aligns with your wants and needs. You wouldn’t come to me for dental advice, and you shouldn’t rely on non-professionals to design a complex travel experience. Put your vacation into the hands of a trusted travel advisor.

Social media is not a reliable travel advisor

Online reviews and social media posts are highly subjective—and often inaccurate. One traveler’s “must-do” might be another’s nightmare. And let’s be honest: social media is full of misinformation (including influencers suggesting you arrive at the airport 10 minutes before departure). Travel advisors filter through the noise to give you accurate, relevant, and personalized advice.

Package pricing isn’t meant to be broken apart

When I provide a package price, it comes from trusted, vetted partners on the ground in your destination. These suppliers negotiate rates and coordinate logistics in ways individual travelers—and even advisors—cannot replicate. The value lies in how every element works together seamlessly, like a well-oiled machine.

Travel is an investment—in memories, experiences, and time you can never get back. My role as a travel advisor isn’t just to book trips; it’s to protect your investment, guide your decisions, and help you experience the world in the most meaningful way possible.
